Natural blue amber from the Dominican Republic is like no other amber in the world. Dominican Blue Amber is one of the rarest minerals derived from an extinct species of broad-leaved tropical trees known as Hymenaea protera. The color is not solid, and most pieces will appear to be a beautiful gold green color, but catch the light just right and highlights of blue appear, which makes it quite difficult to photograph their true colors. Many pieces have underlying colors of red, green and even purple. Blue amber, alone among all ambers, has the ability to fluoresce under a black light where it glows a vibrant blue white. While there are theories to why this amber appears blue, it is still not fully understood.
